In today’s blog post, we’ll delve into the exciting world of baby development. We’ll provide insights into what you can expect during each week of all three trimesters. However, it’s important to remember that while we’re here to celebrate your pregnancy, we’re not medical professionals. First Trimester
During the first few weeks of your pregnancy, you won’t even know that you’re pregnant! But once it’s official, your doctor will track your pregnancy and predict your due date from the first day of your last period. By week five of your pregnancy, your baby looks like a tiny collection of (very important) tubes. One of the tubes is forming the brain and spinal cord, while the other is developing into the baby’s heart. You may begin to feel the first signs of pregnancy symptoms, such as a morning sickness and the urge to urinate.
By week eight, you might not look pregnant yet, but you probably feel it! If you don’t have morning sickness, you probably are at least feeling more tired — after all, a lot of your energy is being used to grow a baby inside you! Your baby is about the size of a bean and is beginning to grow eyes, nose, and ears. By week eleven, the baby is still only 2 inches long, or about the size of a prune. Most of this size is the baby’s head, which is half of the entire body.

By the end of your first trimester, you hopefully will be past morning sickness and begin to see a baby bump. Your baby is slightly more proportional now, with the head taking up one third of the body.
Second Trimester
At week 15, the second week of your second trimester, you can schedule a gender determination ultrasound at Sweet Baby Face in Louisville! At this point, your baby’s muscles are getting stronger, and you may be able to see them moving around, making fists, and even trying out different facial expressions.
By week 16, your baby is about the size of a small apple. This is the point that many women start to enjoy the “pregnancy glow” because their blood volume has increased to support the rapidly growing baby. This increased blood flow can come with some downsides — along with rosey cheeks, you may experience nosebleeds.
At week 17, your baby’s lungs are breathing amniotic fluid and blood is pumping through their body. Hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes grow, and your breasts are growing in preparation for feeding your newborn.
This is a very exciting time in your pregnancy, and a great moment to schedule an ultrasound, as you’ll be able to see the beginnings of your baby’s face and facial expressions!
